SAY YES TO Digital Mamography

Maryann Brock

Nurse and Breast Cancer Survivor

A diagnosis of breast cancer is a scary thing and I believe it is something every woman worries about. I personally know that a positive diagnosis can really rock your world. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 I was fortunate I was a nurse and could get my testing done right away. I clearly understood that early detection is the key to survival.

Mary Ann BrockAfter a bilateral modified mastectomy I spent my next eight months making regular visits to Seton Cancer Institute in West Branch. I felt so blessed that my diagnosis came shortly after Seton opened their doors and I was able to receive all my testing and chemotherapy right here at home. Prior to Seton opening I knew many people who traveled all over the state for their treatments, sometimes just to receive an injection or to have bloodwork done. We all are fortunate to have the Seton team in our community.

To take the next step in the prevention and cure of breast cancer in our community we must bring digital mammography to our area. This vital piece of equipment has so much to offer. The test does not take as long. The images are clearer. The results are available much faster making treatment available sooner.

All women must continue to receive their yearly mammograms. As women we have to encourage our family members, friends and coworkers to schedule their yearly mammogram and to perform their monthly self breast checks. You know your body better than anyone and you will be the first to notice a sign of change. If you notice a change, I encourage you to be proactive and act on that change. Call your doctor and schedule an appointment.

In closing, I am honored and proud to be involved in this important program and to be a part of bringing digital mammography to West Branch Regional Medical Center.
